November 01, 2016No Kill Pima County is an animal advocacy group that works with the Pima County Animal Care Center (PACC) to reduce the number of animals that are unnecessarily euthanized in Tucson. On occasion, I do data analysis work for them and recently I created an interactive visualization tool they can use to investigate patterns in euthanasia trends:
The application was build on AWS Elastic Beanstalk using Python, DC.js, D3.js, and keen.io.

My interest in language was sparked by Latin classes I took in high-school. Latin is an interesting language for a number of reasons — the aspect of it that always fascinated me is the structure of Roman epic poetry. In this project I begin by developing a Bayesian classifier for predicting poetic meter in Virgil’s Aeneid. Following that, I highlight the problems inherent in using a Naive Bayes approach and solve those problems by extending the classifier with a Hidden Markov Model.

I will be graduating from the University of Arizona in May, 2016 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Information Science and Technology. My degree program places an emphasis on the interdisciplinary applications of information and computer science. I have had the opportunity to take a wide breadth of courses covering topics such as machine learning, music production, and library science. Part of earning my degree is completing an independent project that captures the knowledge I have gained from my education.
The most valuable lesson from my education is that learning can (and should be) creative, collaborative, and fun. I wanted to spend this semester learning about concepts that interest me – machine learning algorithms, probabilistic models, and natural language processing – by making art.

I dug this one out of my Google Drive yesterday. The text that originally accompanied this project has been lost. I’ve dated the article to reflect, approximately, when the project was originally finished. The writeup that follows will be brief and I will do my best to faithfully recall the circumstances surrounding this project.
During my second year of University I participated in a project with fellow students and the Arizona Sonora Desert Museum (ASM). We conducted field research in an attempt to characterize the activity of animals living in riparian areas (land-water-interfaces) in the Sonoran Desert. The “Wildcat Water Watchers”.
